Somebody’s estate is photographed and sitting in your intake, three hundred lots deep, and every one of them needs a name before the catalog goes live Thursday. “Box of misc kitchen.” “Old tools.” “Assorted books.” You know those vague lots are where the money leaks out — the good piece hides in the box nobody bothered to open — but it’s you, one person, and it’s Sunday night.
The typing is the drudgery. There’s a worse feeling, though, and if you’ve been on the block a while you know exactly the one I mean: the dread of confidently calling a thing what it isn’t. You label a bowl “Fire-King,” a collector standing at the rail knows it’s plain Pyrex, and now every other number in your catalog is suspect. Get caught making one up and buyers quietly stop trusting your descriptions — which, when you get down to it, is the only thing you’re really selling.

What it reliably returns is the factory build data encoded in the VIN — the manufacturer’s own record of what left the line. Why edition matters to you: a book-club edition and a true first printing can sit identical on the shelf and differ a hundredfold in value. The ISBN plus the copyright-page number line (one ending “… 3 2 1” generally means a first printing) is how you flag the ones worth pulling into their own lot.
Honest limits:
- No ISBN, no lookup. Anything before roughly 1970 — and a lot of the real money in books lives back there — is back to author, title, publisher, and date by hand.
- The lookup identifies the book. It does not grade condition, and condition is most of a used book’s value. A first edition with a torn jacket and water stains is a different animal from a clean one. That’s your eyes, not the database.
The move is triage: scan ISBNs to separate the flats from the sleepers, then hand-research the handful worth your time.
UPC: the overstock pallet you’d rather not undersell
A store-returns or overstock consignment lands and it’s a wall of sealed boxes — tools, small appliances, toys, electronics. Typing “cordless drill, works” sells it short and you know it. The UPC barcode is the shortcut to a real product name.
Free barcode lookups (again, often just the 12-digit number in a search engine) return the manufacturer, product name, and model. That turns a mystery box into a specific, searchable, biddable lot.
